1. SIM cards & social media access

  • Buy a tourist SIM in advance: Regular SIMs in China often block Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Google services. Special SIMs for foreigners unlock access to international social media.

  • Backup options: Prepare a reliable VPN and set it up before traveling.

  • Free Wi‑Fi limitations: Even in hotels or cafes, Facebook, IG, or Google Maps may be blocked. Don’t rely solely on public Wi‑Fi.

2. Pack seasonal clothing

  • Spring (Mar–May): Mild mornings and evenings, occasional rain. Bring an umbrella or raincoat and a light jacket.

  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Hot and humid, temperatures up to 35°C. Wear breathable clothing, a hat, and sunscreen with high SPF.

  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): Cooler weather, comfortable for walking. Bring ankle-covering shoes and a light jacket.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Very cold, especially in northern China. Prepare a thick coat, scarf, gloves, and non-slip shoes.

3. Watch out for overpriced charges at tourist spots

  • Entry and service fees can be inflated: Theme parks, temples, or parks may charge extra for admission, parking, or cable cars.

  • Restaurants and souvenir shops in tourist zones: Prices can be higher than average. Compare prices or check reviews first.

  • Extra service fees: Costume rentals or shuttle services often add hidden costs. Confirm prices before using.

4. Install WeChat

  • Main app for communication & payments: WeChat (微信) is essential in China for messages, calls, video chats, and WeChat Pay. Sign up and verify your account before traveling for smooth payments and communication.

5. Download Baidu Map or Amap

  • Google Maps won’t work in China. Use Baidu Map (百度地图) or Amap (高德地图).

  • Key features:

    • Navigation for subway and buses

    • Schedules for public transport

    • Restaurant and attraction reviews

  • Offline maps: Download offline areas before leaving the city in case of no internet.

6. Prepare cash & credit cards

  • Cash backup: 1,000–2,000 CNY for markets, small shops, or services that don’t accept cards.

  • ATMs & currency exchange: Use UnionPay cards or exchange some money in Thailand beforehand.

  • Credit cards: Visa/MasterCard accepted in major hotels, malls, and tourist shops.

Have a smooth, fun, and safe trip in China!
